I don't know about you but there are many nights when my head hits the pillow exhausted but sleep eludes me. My mind races, I toss and turn and I just can't seem to settle. Sleep statistics over the years are showing that at almost every age, we are not getting enough sleep. Scientists agree that the average adult requires 7 solid hours of sleep, however we are averaging between 5.5 hours and 6. In the U.S. alone, 50 to 70 million people suffer from sleep disorders.
There are medicated alternatives often prescribed to alleviate sleep issues but if there was a natural alternative that was effective, would we not all choose that? Enter Lavender.... Lavender essential oil is a compound that is steam distilled from the lavender flower. Lavender essential oil is known to have calming and soothing therapeutic benefits which can help with falling asleep and staying asleep.
Oil vs Fragrance
There is a difference between lavender essential oil and lavender fragrance oil. It is important to understand these differences because it determines the effectiveness of the therapeutic properties of the lavender itself. The pure essential oil is the essence of what has been extracted from the lavender flower. Pure lavender essential oil is never diluted and does not have additives. In contrast, lavender fragrance oil is the 'chemically' produced version of the real deal. This is what is used in lavender perfumes, body sprays, soaps, etc. This form of lavender contains little to no therapeutic properties. Be sure to do your research and read the labels of all lavender products. If the lavender is not the pure essential oil, the ingredient list will be written along the lines of 'lavender fragrance oil' or 'lavender fragrance'. Steer clear of lavender products like this and choose products where you know the source is natural.
