What is oil pulling? A practice in which the person swishes or holds oil in their mouth in order to pull out toxins from the body. I have been oil pulling for quite some time now and I really couldn't imagine my life without it any more. I recently went away on a business trip and did not have access to my daily oil pulling routine and boy did I ever notice a difference! I missed it so much and couldn't wait to get home and start back up again. Oil pulling is a holistic health practice that has been used in ancient medicine. According to Ayurvedic medicine, the oil pulls mucous, bacteria and toxins from your body through your saliva. In traditional Chinese medicine, our tongues are mapped by our organ locations – so, sections of the tongue are connected to the kidneys, lungs, spleen, liver, heart, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine. Benefits
Oil pulling is traditionally done on a daily basis for 5-20 minutes. The best time of day is first thing in the morning before you have had anything to eat. When I first started oil pulling, it was hard and I could only last for 5 minutes each time for 2 weeks in a row! I also gagged a few times - it's a new, foreign sensation that takes practice. Then each day that passed, I added 1 minute, then 3 minutes, then 5 minutes until I was up to 20 minutes. I have 3 children, so 20 minutes of my day spent oil pulling and not talking, presents its challenges. I found what worked best for me was oil pulling while in the shower. When you have completed your oil pull, make sure to spit your oil in a garbage can and NOT down the shower drain or sink. Oil can harden and clog your drains as it cools. You can use sesame, sunflower, avocado and more.... I like coconut as the flavour of the oil is the most pleasant. Using Essential Oils I also use essential oils when I oil pull. My favourite essential oils to use are peppermint or spearmint. I like to make pre-portioned, ready-to-go, oil discs. Here's how I do it... What you need for easy portioned, oil infused coconut oil discs
Spoon coconut oil into each candy mould, smooth and flatten until even. Drop 1 drop of essential oil onto each mould filled with coconut oil - 1 drop is all you need. Carefully carry your candy mould tray to the freezer and set on a flat surface. Allow to harden and cool for 30 minutes. Remove from freezer and gently pop out each mould and store individual portions in a glass jar. Keep refrigerated. They should look something like this I had a check up and cleaning at my dentist last week and the dentist told me that the health of my teeth and gums has dramatically improved since my last check up 6 months ago. I credit the pull!
