All you need to do is go to any public place and you will see a hand sanitizing station that dispenses a coin sized amount of alcohol-smelling liquid. Hand sanitizer is everywhere. Free access to hand sanitizer in every public place began about 10 years ago. Lets talk about the reality of having sanitizer so readily accessible.
1. Show me the money. Santizer is a billion dollar industry that relies on fear to profit - they are definitely succeeding. We are led to believe sanitizer will kill the bad germs that cause us to get sick.
2. Over usage. There is value in sanitizers in limited usage and form but does the average shopper in a grocery store or child at school need to use it? No - but when we see it, we think we need it.
3. Potentially harmful. By now, we can agree on the fact that the FDA does not always have our best health interests in mind. They often push overuse of medication, however, when the FDA tells us that something is not good for us, we should listen. We should listen because they tell us that many drugs with crazy side effects ARE safe to use. When they go on record to tell us that something could be harmful, there is a high chance it has the potential to hurt us. See this article which states the FDA found the, "presence of sanitizing chemicals in the bloodstream, which may be harmful for children, pregnant women, and other consumers"
Natural May Not Always Be Better??
Essential oils have incredible antibacterial properties which essentially (pun intended) can act as sanitizer. Certain oils have the ability to kill 99.9% of germs. There's your answer, right? Wrong. Over the past few years, I have been heavily researching the proper and safe usage of essential oils. Most natural hand sanitizers (95%+) contain a combination of essential oils that may not be suitable for use on all age groups. According to Using Essential Oils Safely these oils are not safe for children with regular topical use.
The Better Way
We started having problems with generic hand sanitizer when my oldest daughter started Kindergarten. There is hand sanitizer in every classroom at her school. She would come home from school in tears with raw, red, burning hands. In general, kids should not be using these sanitizers regularly as the chemicals can enter the bloodstream and are too strong for their skin.
The Balanced Life has an alternative! A natural and safe hand sanitizing mist called Germaphobe.
